Senior Portraits on a Family Farm in St. Mary's County, Maryland
Let’s chat about Nicole's unforgettable senior session that I recently had the pleasure of photographing. It was an absolute blast capturing her unique personality, love for the country, and passion for archery. We started the session at a picturesque family friend's farm in Chaptico, Maryland, a location that offered a perfect backdrop for showcasing Nicole's interests and roots.
Nicole’s dad was incredibly helpful throughout the session. He set up hay bales that he had spray-painted with bull's-eyes and her high school mascot, the Braves, adding a personal and meaningful touch to the photos. These little details made the session extra special, highlighting Nicole’s connection to her school and community. She graduated from Chopticon High School in 2024, and her pride in her school was evident throughout the shoot.
For her first outfit, Nicole chose a camouflage shirt, jeans, and work boots, perfectly representing her love for the country and archery. Her crossbow added an exciting element to the photos, giving them a unique and personal touch. This setup not only showcased her hobbies but also her authentic self, creating a narrative that was distinctly Nicole.
As the session progressed, Nicole's dad flipped the hay bales around to create a charming bench setup. He added locally grown mums as fall décor, placed strategically in front of a beautiful willow tree during the golden hour. The soft, warm light filtering through the tree branches added a magical quality to the photos, making this part of the session particularly memorable. Nicole’s second outfit—a cream-colored tank top paired with her beloved boots and a stylish hat—continued to highlight her country roots while adding a touch of elegance.
My favorite outfit, however, was Nicole’s stunning statement red dress paired with knee-high white cowgirl boots. The bold color of the dress stood out beautifully against the natural backdrop of the farm. Nicole’s dad and family friend customized a wood pallet, leaning it against a shed to create a rustic prop for Nicole to pose with. They brought the mums over to this setup as well, adding vibrant pops of color that complemented the earthy tones of the surroundings.
In a unique twist, Nicole also wore her uniform from the criminal justice program at the Tech Center in St. Mary's County Public Schools. This was a first for me, and it was incredibly inspiring to capture her in this outfit. Nicole aspires to become a forensic accountant, and these photos will serve as a cherished reminder of the beginning of her journey in this field. This part of the session added depth and dimension, showcasing Nicole’s ambitions and dedication.
For the final outfit and location, we moved to another family friend’s property by the water. Here, we captured the last light of the day on a serene dock, creating beautiful sunset photos. Nicole’s casual outfit for this part of the session perfectly matched the relaxed, peaceful vibe of the setting. The golden hues of the sunset reflected on the water, creating a dreamy, warm atmosphere that was the perfect ending to a fantastic session.
Nicole’s senior photo session was a perfect example of how being prepared and incorporating a variety of looks and locations can result in a rich, comprehensive portrait of a senior year. Every outfit and setting told a different part of Nicole’s story, capturing her interests, personality, and aspirations in a meaningful way.
