There’s something magical about sunrise in Washington, D.C. The air feels calm, the city is still quiet, and the first light spills across the monuments like a scene from a dream. On October 10th, I met Hayden and her mom at the Washington National Cathedral just as the sky started to glow pink — and from that moment, I knew this session would be unforgettable.

Hayden had flown in all the way from Houston, Texas for her senior portraits. She wanted something that felt differentfrom what her classmates were doing back home — something elegant, timeless, and uniquely D.C. The National Cathedral, with its intricate architecture, ivy-covered towers, and gardens in full fall color, was the perfect backdrop.

A Sunrise Worth Waking Up For

We started shooting right at 7 a.m., and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The sun was slowly rising behind the cathedral while the moon was still visible overhead — creating one of those rare, cinematic moments that photographers dream of. The light was soft and golden, wrapping Hayden in a glow that made every frame feel like art.

One of my favorite images from the morning is of Hayden standing in front of the cathedral’s stone façade, the moon still hanging behind her. She and her mom both gasped when they saw it on the back of my camera — it’s the kind of moment that reminds me why I love photographing seniors who are fully present and excited to create something beautiful together.

Outfits, Style, and Vibe

Hayden’s session was a mix of floral and elegant, enchanted and modern. Her first two outfits — long white dresses with soft floral prints from Altar’d State — were perfect for the Bishop’s Garden, surrounded by ivy and blooming fall flowers.

She then changed into a short white satin cocktail dress from Lulus, complete with a bow detail that gave off a classy, editorial vibe against the clean cathedral architecture. We finished with jeans, cowgirl boots, and a crochet sweater — a nod to her Texas roots and her personality. It was the perfect way to end the session with something fun and casual.

The entire morning felt like an enchanted garden come to life. Between the stone paths, arches, and sunlight filtering through the trees, every corner of the National Cathedral grounds felt cinematic.

Why Seniors Love the Washington National Cathedral for Photos

If you’ve ever visited Washington, D.C., you know how breathtaking the National Cathedral is. But seeing it at sunrise is something else entirely. The mix of European-style architecture, historic detail, and peaceful gardens make it one of the most unique senior portrait locations on the East Coast.

For seniors like Hayden who travel from out of state, it’s a chance to do something completely different from what they’d find at home. Houston might have big skies, but it doesn’t have Gothic towers or flower-lined stone walls like this! The Bishop’s Garden especially feels like stepping into a storybook — the perfect setting for floral, romantic, or film-inspired senior portraits.

If you’re planning senior photos here, keep in mind that the Washington National Cathedral requires a photography permit, which costs $250 as of October 2025. You can learn more about their photography policy and plan your visit at their website here.

Planning Senior Portraits in Washington, D.C.

Whether you live nearby or are flying in like Hayden did, a little planning goes a long way toward creating your dream senior photos. Here are a few of my favorite tips for planning a destination session in D.C.:

Choose sunrise or early morning.
The light is soft, the air is calm, and you’ll avoid the crowds that come later in the day. The National Cathedral opens early, and sunrise sessions make the gardens feel private and peaceful.

Bring multiple outfits that tell your story.
My “three-outfit rule” always applies — something classic (like white or cream), something statement-worthy, and something that shows your personality. For travel sessions, I recommend packing your clothes in garment bags to avoid wrinkles.

Book your session early.
D.C. is busy year-round, especially during cherry blossom season and in the fall. Booking early ensures that I can help you secure your permit and plan your timeline stress-free.

Work with a photographer who knows the area.
The Cathedral’s light changes quickly with the sunrise, and there are dozens of hidden corners and garden spots that most people overlook. My job is to find those perfect angles that bring your photos to life — and to handle all the behind-the-scenes details so you can just enjoy the moment.

Consider my Luxe Senior Portrait Experience.

Destination Senior Portraits for Travelers

One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is getting to meet seniors from all over the country — and sometimes, the world. Hayden’s session is the perfect example of how special it can be to turn your senior portraits into part of your travel story.

Washington, D.C. is an incredible destination for senior photos. Between the National Cathedral, the monuments, Georgetown, and the gardens, there’s endless variety — from editorial architecture to natural, glowy fields. Many of my seniors make a full weekend out of it: exploring the city, getting pampered with hair and makeup, and ending their trip with a gallery full of images that feel timeless and unique.

And while D.C. is one of my most requested destinations, I also travel for sessions across the United States and beyond. Whether you’re dreaming of the coast of California, the streets of Paris, or your favorite small town at home, I’ll help you design a session that feels completely true to you.

About the Location

The Washington National Cathedral is located in the northwest area of Washington, D.C., near Georgetown and the National Zoo. The cathedral and its surrounding gardens are open to the public, and photography is allowed with a permit.

For seniors visiting from out of state, it’s the perfect combination of history, architecture, and natural beauty — and it’s easily accessible from anywhere in the city.

This location photographs beautifully year-round, but my favorite seasons are spring (for cherry blossoms) and fall (for golden, warm light like Hayden’s session).
