Cheerleading senior pictures at Chopticon High School! See Lilly's sunrise football field session with Southern Maryland senior photographer K Nicole Photography.

There’s just something about a crisp fall morning, an empty football field, and a pair of pom-poms that makes for the perfect cheerleading senior photo session!

I recently met up with Lilly, a Chopticon High School Class of 2027 senior, for a fun cheerleading photoshoot right on her home turf in Southern Maryland. Between the gorgeous morning light, the football field, and the stadium bleachers, we had everything we needed to create senior portraits that celebrated this part of her high school experience.

And can we talk about that sunrise lighting?! Because it was SO good.

Sunrise Cheerleading Senior Photos at Chopticon High School

We scheduled Lilly’s cheerleading photos just after sunrise, and while that meant braving a chilly fall morning, the lighting made it completely worth it!

There’s something I absolutely love about photographing sports portraits early in the morning. The stadium is quiet, the light is soft, and we have so much freedom to get creative without working around the usual activity happening on the field.

For Lilly’s session, we took advantage of that beautiful early morning sunshine and explored different areas of Chopticon High School’s football stadium.

The cold, crisp fall air and gorgeous natural light gave her cheer photos such a beautiful look. It was the kind of morning that reminds me why I love sunrise sessions so much!

More Than Just Traditional Cheerleading Pictures

When you think about cheerleading pictures, you might immediately picture the traditional team photos taken during the school year.

And while those photos are wonderful to have, a personalized cheerleading senior session is something entirely different!

For Lilly, we wanted to create something fun that highlighted her personality while celebrating her time as a Chopticon High School cheerleader.

We photographed around the football field, incorporated the bleachers and stadium stands, and used her pom-poms throughout the session to tie everything back to cheer.

I love using familiar spaces in creative ways. A football field might be somewhere you spend countless afternoons and Friday nights throughout high school, but during a personalized portrait session, it becomes the perfect backdrop for photos that are uniquely yours.

And the best part? You don’t need to bring a ton of props to make your sports senior pictures special. Lilly brought her pom-poms, and that was all we needed!

Why I Love Sports Senior Photo Sessions

Your high school years are about so much more than what happens in the classroom.

For so many seniors, sports are a huge part of their lives. Between practices, games, competitions, teammates, and everything in between, these activities become some of the most memorable parts of their high school experience.

That’s exactly why I love offering personalized sports senior portraits.

Whether you’re a cheerleader, softball player, basketball player, football player, dancer, or another student athlete, your senior year is the perfect opportunity to document something you’ve dedicated so much of your time to.

And your photos don’t have to look like everyone else’s!

We can incorporate your uniform, equipment, school colors, and favorite places around your school while creating portraits that feel stylish, personal, and completely you.

Can You Book Sports Pictures Separately From Your Senior Session?

Absolutely! And that’s exactly what Lilly did.

Her cheerleading photoshoot was booked as a standalone session, separate from her traditional senior portrait experience.

I actually love this option for student athletes who want to dedicate an entire session to their sport without sacrificing outfit changes or locations during their regular senior photos.

Instead of trying to squeeze everything into one session, we can focus entirely on creating unique sports portraits.

For cheerleaders, that might mean photographing around the football field, using the stadium bleachers, incorporating pom-poms, and finding creative ways to show off your school spirit.

For other athletes, we can customize the experience around your sport and the locations that mean the most to you.

If you’re already planning your traditional senior pictures, consider adding a separate sports session to document this chapter of your life, too!

Planning Your Own Cheerleading Senior Pictures in Maryland

If you’re a Maryland cheerleader thinking about booking your own senior pictures, here are a few things I recommend!

Choose a Location That Means Something to You

Your high school football field, gymnasium, or another location connected to your sport is a great place to start.

For Lilly, photographing at Chopticon High School made perfect sense. It allowed us to create portraits in the same environment where she spends time cheering throughout the school year.

Bring Your Cheer Accessories

Pom-poms, your uniform, and other cheer-related accessories are perfect additions to your session.

You don’t need to bring everything you own! A few meaningful items are more than enough to give your gallery variety and personality.

Consider an Early Morning Session

I know waking up before the sun isn’t everyone’s favorite thing, but trust me when I say the lighting can be worth it! Plus, you’ll likely be the only one on the field.

Especially during the fall, sunrise sessions can give us beautiful, soft light and a quieter environment for photographing around school athletic facilities.

Of course, the best time depends on the location, school access, and the look we’re hoping to achieve.

Make It Your Own!

Your sports senior photos should reflect your personality just as much as your sport.

Whether you want something fun and playful, bold and dramatic, or a combination of both, we’ll work together to create a session that feels like you.
