If you’re thinking about doing your senior photos in Washington DC, this post will give you all my helpful tips for planning your senior photos here.
There’s just something about DC that makes senior photos feel elevated. The architecture, the gardens, the history, the way the light hits the city at sunrise. It all creates something you just can’t get anywhere else.
And lately, I’ve been seeing more and more seniors (like Hayden, who flew in from Texas!) choosing DC as their destination for senior portraits and I completely get why.
If you’re planning your own senior session here, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know; from the best locations to what time of day to shoot, what to wear, and how to make the entire experience feel easy and actually fun.

Why Seniors Are Traveling to Washington DC for Their Photos
Most seniors get their photos done locally. A field. A park. Maybe downtown.
But DC? It’s a completely different level.
When you choose Washington DC for your senior photos, you’re getting:
- iconic architecture
- elegant gardens
- clean, timeless backdrops
- variety in one location
And most importantly—photos that don’t look like everyone else’s.
For seniors traveling from out of state, this is a chance to create something that feels intentional and unique, not just another session.
I photograph seniors from all over the country who come to DC specifically for this reason—and we plan their entire session around making the most of their time here.

The Best Locations for Senior Photos in Washington DC
One of the biggest advantages of DC is how many incredible locations are within a short distance of each other.
Here are a few of my favorites:
Washington National Cathedral
If you want something that feels elegant, romantic, and completely different from anything else—this is it.
The architecture is stunning, the Bishop’s Garden feels like an enchanted European garden, and the light at sunrise is unreal.

Important note:
The cathedral requires a photography permit (currently $250-$350 as of October 2026), but I handle that entire process for my clients.

Georgetown
Georgetown is perfect if you want:
- cobblestone streets
- classic DC charm
- ivy-covered walls
- cute storefronts
It’s one of the most versatile spots in DC and works for both dressy and casual outfits.

Lincoln Memorial + Reflecting Pool
This is the most iconic DC look.
It feels grand, clean, and timeless—especially at sunrise when it’s not crowded.

Jefferson Memorial
If you’re dreaming of those iconic Washington DC senior photos with grand white columns and beautiful architecture, the Jefferson Memorial is another location worth considering!
With its towering marble columns, elegant architecture, and views overlooking the Tidal Basin, this location creates the perfect backdrop for timeless, editorial-inspired senior portraits.
It’s especially beautiful during cherry blossom season, but the architecture makes it a stunning option throughout the year.
And if the Lincoln Memorial is experiencing construction or access restrictions during your visit, the Jefferson Memorial can be a gorgeous alternative for achieving that classic DC look.

Gardens + Seasonal Spots
Depending on the time of year:
- spring = cherry blossoms
- summer = greenery
- fall = warm tones and golden light
We can build your session around what’s in bloom.

Sunrise vs Sunset: The Best Time for Senior Photos in DC
I’ll be honest—sunrise wins every time in DC.
Here’s why:
- fewer people
- softer, more flattering light
- cooler temperatures
- more flexibility with locations
Sunset can work, but DC gets crowded fast, and the light is less predictable between buildings.
Most of my DC senior sessions start early (around 6:30–7:00am depending on the season), and it’s always worth it.

What to Wear for Senior Photos in Washington DC
Outfits matter more than people think—especially in a location like DC where everything feels elevated.
I always recommend starting with this structure:
1. Classic Look
Something timeless like a white or neutral dress. This photographs beautifully against the architecture and greenery.

2. Statement Outfit
This is your moment. A dress you love, something flowy, something bold—whatever makes you feel confident.

3. Personality Outfit
This shows who you are right now. Jeans, boots, a sweater, something casual that still feels styled.

Do You Need a Permit for Senior Photos in Washington DC?

Examples:
- Washington National Cathedral → requires permit
- Some gardens → may require permits
- Certain monuments → restricted at times
